SwitchArcade Round-Up: Sephiroth Arrives Early, ‘Touhou Luna Knights’ and Today’s Other New Releases, Tons of Sales, and More

ByASNF

Dec 21, 2020

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 18th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got a gigantic list of holiday sales that took me a few hours to type up. Wow! We also have several new releases to look at, though I didn’t mince words with some of them. That kind of mood today, friends. That kind of mood. I also put in some news because if I didn’t, some sort of one-winged angel might have skewered me with his giant, not-at-all-overcompensating-for-anything sword. Let’s get to business!

News

Take the Sephiroth Challenge in ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’

In Mr. Sakurai’s Sephiroth presentation shown earlier today, he ran through all of the details of the upcoming new character and all of the things coming with him. The most exciting bit? If you own the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 or have pre-bought the Sephiroth DLC, you can take on the Sephiroth Challenge. If you can beat Sephiroth before December 22nd, you’ll unlock him and the Northern Cave stage early. If you don’t feel like it, he’ll just unlock normally on December 22nd for those who have picked up the appropriate DLC. Also announced during the presentation were some new Mii Fighter costumes. Aerith, Tifa, and Barret add more Final Fantasy 7 representation to the game, while the Geno costume from Super Mario RPG finally kills the dream for those hoping he would be made a full character. Good luck in the challenge!

New Retro Games Are Now Available for Switch Online Subscribers

As we mentioned a few days ago, some new NES and Super NES games were set to arrive today for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Those games are now available if you update the respective apps. For the NES, Piko Interactive presents Beam Software’s adventure game Nightshade, while on the Super NES, you’ve got Nintendo and Rare’s Donkey Kong Country 3, Nihon Telenet’s Super Valis IV, and Jaleco’s The Ignition Factor and Tuff E Nuff all ready to play. It’s an odd mix of titles, but there’s plenty of fun to be had with them.

New Releases

Touhou Luna Knights ($17.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Touhou Project games really run the gamut in terms of quality, so unless someone gives you the heads-up it’s hard to know which ones are good and which ones are… less good. This is one of the good ones. It’s developed by Team Ladybug, who specialize in making pretty cool 2D action games. Yes, it’s another Metroidvania and you probably have more than a few of those sitting in your backlog already, but it’s a really solid one. Excellent art, fun gameplay, and just fundamentally really well-designed.

Arcade Archives Vs. Tennis ($7.99)

This 1984 release from Nintendo represents what I’m comfortable calling the ultimate version of Nintendo’s original 8-bit tennis game. It has all the proper multiplayer options in both singles and doubles that other versions of the games lack, so if you like playing this game with others this is your best bet. On the other hand, if you’re content with the single-player game, the version on the Nintendo Switch Online will serve you well. Heh, “serve”. Hamster has done its usual good job with this, though I’d imagine these Vs. games are like shooting fish in a barrel for them at this point anyway.

Freddy Spaghetti ($4.99)

Very cute premise on this one. You’re a piece of sentient spaghetti, going on an adventure as living pasta created as a lab tends to. It’s silly, has funny physics, and a surprisingly compelling story. Some of the level designs aren’t as exciting as you might hope, but on the whole this is a rather enjoyable and unique little game. Its highly reasonable price makes it easy to forgive its flaws, and none of them are all that significant. Definitely the best game about living pasta I’ve played this week.

Animal Pals Bubble Pop ($7.99)

Another cheap rip-off of Taito’s Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move. I’m tired today, so no kid gloves. If you want to pay the same price as you would for the real Puzzle Bobble, which is available on Switch through Arcade Archives, for a much worse-looking, -playing, and -sounding version of the same idea, here’s your hook-up. But hey, this one has King-like power-ups! Well, it exists.

Dark Arcana The Carnival ($14.99)

Superman never made any money, playing the games from Artifex Mundi, and sometimes I despair the world will never see another man, like him. I wrote that just to amuse myself. This was a long article to put together, and not in the fun way. At any rate, this is another Artifex Mundi hidden object adventure game. You explore two worlds in this one, with the aim being to stop an ancient evil from breaking free and wreaking havoc on our happy normal reality. Also, there’s a monkey sidekick. I’ll repeat that: there’s a monkey sidekick. What more do you need?

60 Seconds! Reatomized ($9.99)

If you really, really enjoyed 60 Seconds!, you may be interested in this Reatomized version of the game. It makes some graphical improvements, and also adds a new gameplay mode, more options and interactions, some new unlockables, and achievements. At its core, this is the same as it always was: a madcap game of grabbing what you think you need with a very strict time limit, and then trying to make a go of it with what you brought. If you haven’t bought the game before now it probably goes without saying that this is the version you want to pick up, but if you already own it the choice gets a bit harder. There’s certainly a fair bit of new content here, but I think you’d have to have genuinely loved the original game to care enough about that stuff to pay another ten bucks. Well, I leave it up to you.

Shikaku Shapes ($6.99)

This puzzle game has a familiar enough premise, though I’m not sure I’ve seen this exact style before. You have a grid with some numbers on it, and you need to make shapes containing each number consisting of exactly the number of squares it specifies. You get 90 puzzles ranging in complexity from simple five-by-five grids all the way up to fifteen-by-fifteen monsters. The presentation is fairly simple, but you can at least pick between light and dark themes depending on your needs. Not a bad choice for logic puzzle fans.

Crystal Ortha ($14.99)

The latest release from our prolific buddies at KEMCO comes by way of developer Hit-Point, which usually means some unusual gameplay mechanics and a less-than-thrilling story. Your character is on a journey to find a legendary treasure, and to accomplish that you’ll have to solve puzzles, battle enemies, and craft weapons. I really like the visuals on this one, at least relative to the usual fare from this publisher. The sprites have a nice late 16-bit look to them. I’m not sure this is necessarily worth fifteen bucks, especially with how many great high-end JRPGs are on sale at this very moment, but it at least looks to be trying something more than the typical release from KEMCO. That counts for at least two points on my hundred-and-twelve-point personal scale.

Suicide Guy Collection ($10.99)

Just as you would probably expect from the title, this is the two Suicide Guy games bundled together in one convenient purchase. The usual rules apply: make sure the individual releases aren’t on sale if you’re planning to buy this, as they frequently get deep discounts that will put them lower than the price of this set. But this set too will likely get discounted. Anyway, these are amusing enough titles and it’s nice to be able to grab them in one go. The title may sound dark but you’re really just trying to wake up the titular fellow from his dreams in each scenario.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Ha ha ha, oh no. This took a very long time to type out, everyone. I’d love to give you some recommendations on top of that, but I think I’ll just direct you to the list. The good news is that the weekend outbox is pretty much empty, leaving you free to consider only the new sales. Have fun!
